Music and Hearing

I'm amazed by the phenomenon whereby musical pitches, vibrations of sound, a purely scientific happening, are perceived by our ears and imbued with emotions.

For example, if you play a "c" and then follow it with a "d" and then play a "b" below the "c" and then go to "c" again, your ear will hear the "c" like homebase. But your ear will likewise do that with any other pitch, depending upon what notes surround it and what the context of the musical phrase is.

You can't just play anything, and have it be felt by a listener. There is pre-set stuff in our hearing that makes sense to our ears. As if our brains were some kind of emotional cpu and songs were code. Music theory (excepting 12-tone and similar theories) seeks to explain this cpu.
