Letter to the Editor

Dear Editor,

I don’t understand why it is necessary for the Grand Rapids Press to print so many letters to the editor that are responses to other letters to the editor. News events and community issues are subjects worthy of being commented upon. In my view, other local citizen’s remarks are much less worthy.

If the Press wishes to promote thoughtful discussion, it could be a lot more discerning. “So-and-so is crazy if they think that…” is not a valid argument. Printing letters such as this promotes squabbling amongst ourselves.

If the Press were to only print letters that primarily addressed news or community topics, and which never made other persons’ views the subject of their own ad hominem remarks, the content of the Press’s editorial page would be much more enriching.

Eradicating response letters altogether would even better. It would instantly make the page more meaningful and less insular.
